John McAslan + Partners has been selected to design a Botanical Gardens and Research Center in Dongguan, China. The scheme features a large gridshell biodome which engages with landscaped mounds both inside and outside the structure. Around the base of the roof structure, a ribbon of glass will provide views which connect these interior and exterior landscapes.

The steel gridshell roof will hold inflated EFTE cushions set within an aluminium subframe. 20% of this EFTE skin will be openable to provide ventilation when required. The design of the roof structure builds on the experience gained by John McAslan + Partners during their transformation of Kings Cross in London, with Project Director Tony Skipper commenting "this technically advanced project is a natural progression for the practice."
